Light: Tuesday

One of the things I love about Saint John’s Gospel is how it is shot through with a dialectic between darkness and light. From the beginning of the Prologue, John makes it clear that the light shines in the darkness. Even though the darkness is there, light will always overcome that darkness.

Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” Where is the light in your life?

Light comes to me in shared conversation with those I revere and trust.
Light comes to me in understanding how the actions of my community, and country
effect millions of others of God’s children.
Light comes to me when I realize how deeply interconnected is all life on this our island home
Light comes to me in awe when I gaze on pictures of the galaxies and nebula of the universe
and know the dance of the Trinity flows through it all.

I awoke with this adaptation of a child’s prayer in my head
Lord Jesus be my heavenly guest
My morning joy , my evening rest
And then I know when this day is through
That I’ve given my all, my heart to you.

I suppose for me the light of my life shines in the communities I am blessed to be a part of especially the pantry community. To serve here is really and truly to experience the life of Christ resurrected. Everyone shares, everyone partakes. All become light.

Thanks so much for this beautiful reminder of our place as light in a dark world. Many thanks!

The quote by the poet, Sarah Williams, comes to mind:
I have loved the stars too fondly to be afraid of the dark.

I think I take the light for granted when there is light all around. I prefer the light in the dark. With all the shadows. This brings me more peace. I prefer the candle lit evening services in the darker months. Is that crazy? There is something warm there in the dark, looking for/at the light.

It is the same for me. The soft glow of votive light invites peace and comfort. Give me a rainy day and a warm fire to sit by anytime.

Light comes to me when I go to the hospital for a right heart catheterization. They put the image up on a big screen and I get to see the titanium cage holding my sternum together (it was cut open during heart transplant surgery). The first time I saw it, I was in awe. You don’t normally want your sternum broken in two. But because of this, I am alive. The light flows into that broken sternum. Jesus showing this awesome power of newness, the breaking of walls to allow the light in.

Light is wonderful, and is what I seek, and receive in small ways, like walking my dog on a bright winter
day. But, as Curtis reminds us, there are times in our lives that the light seems to go out, and you feel unsettled
and abandoned. We don’t here much about this on Sunday mornings, or from your clergy. Thank you Curtis
for your sharing and wisdom on your own experiences of times in your life that the Light seemed to dim.

The Light in my world comes when I feel God’s presence in my heart……..it’s sometimes outside when I hear a bird sing, or see the trees blow in the breeze, or when I ask God to help me listen to His word…that’s when I feel His presence.

I have a strong relationship of the power of Light of Christ dispelling the darkness on our path. If we allow it to guide us we will be on the RIGHT path. If we allow it to shine through us, others will react to that Light accordingly. If we take a moment to take note this Light of His is our protection from evil and wrong paths that we could take. His Light is a Mighty force. Let it shine, shine, shine throughout the world.
