Water: Saturday

The baptismal mystery is that we are continuously dying to the old self and rising to the new creation. That incorporation by water and the Spirit has everything to do with the air we breathe and the water that sustains us.

That was wonderful. It brought back my baptism and the experience of dying to my worldly self and awakening to my spiritual self. I grew up on the North Shore of O’ahu where the ocean can be very powerful and dangerous sonwater reminds me of the passage in the Bible where it says All power is from God.. I have seen His power and felt His power in the ocean.

I remember vividly my baptism. It was in a mountain stream that plunges out of cave at Cumberland Gap and winds along the valley and sinks again into another cave miles from the source. The church members made a temporary dam to create a pool deep enough for immersion. I was twelve. The fragrance of mint, willow and pennyroyal hung in the air. I don’t remember awareness of a new life—- only the mystery and beauty of life itself.

And in the Anima Christi we pray, “Water from Christ’s side, wash out my stains.”+

This series of the Brothers for Lent has been their best yet in my experience. It is profoundly simple yet exquisite. Thank you and I look forward with quiet enthusiasm to the offerings in coming weeks.
