Ongoing conversion happens only in community life. We can’t do it for ourselves. I had a college chaplain who was very fond of saying “There are no solo Christians,” and he was absolutely right. Everyone finds their community – or their overlapping communities – that leads to their conversion.

I hear this comment often, that there are no solo Christians. I think it is better to steer clear of such blanket generalizations, and especially when they are expressed in the negative. It assumes omniscience, for one thing. That is something God alone knows.
What about Julian of Norwich, for example, a Christian whose experiences and insights about God and God’s relationship with humans people read and study and are inspired by 600 years after her death? What about other anchorites and hermits? What about Christisns who are imprisoned and put in solitary confinement for their faith? Can the Holy Spirit not minister as well as human beings?
If one wants to share an insight derived from one’s own experience, it is better to put it in the positive, and in the first person, and humbly. “It has been my experience that….”
